You’re locked out. Ugh. The frustration! And it always seems to happen at the worst possible time. Now what are you going to do? Well, if you haven’t already done your homework, the answer may be even more unpleasant. Telephone and web directories are so packed with locksmith scammers, that you could call half a dozen or more locksmith companies before finally finding an honest, reputable locksmith. That’s the last thing you need when you are dealing with a stressful emergency. Unfortunately, many people don’t realize they’ve reached a scam locksmith company until after they arrive, perform the service, and get stuck with a massive bill.
A recent Better Business Bureau (BBB) warning reported a rash of predatory locksmith companies nationwide. These companies typically advertise as local operators, yet calls are routed through a nationwide answering service that is extremely vague or even secretive about fees. A service for which a trustworthy local locksmith would generally charge no more than $100 can suddenly surge to a price tag of anywhere from $300-$500. Talk about going from bad to worse!
What can you do to protect yourself from locksmith scammers?
The best thing is to become familiar with local locksmith companies you can trust before you find yourself faced with an emergency lockout. Be sure to add their contact info in your cell phone immediately. When that’s not an option, always be sure to get a solid fee for services amount upfront from the person answering the company phone. If they state a solid fee for responding to the call only, and a separate service fee dependent upon the amount of time required to perform the service, chances are good that you’ve reached a scammer.
One Flat Fee, Always
At Access Lock and Key, we will never charge you anything but a flat fee for a standard lockout. Don’t accept anything less. If you find that you have accidentally contacted a scam locksmith company once they arrive on the scene, do not be afraid to refuse their service. Most will insist to run your credit or debit card before providing service and wave away any concerns about end cost with statements like, “it’s ok – you don’t pay for it, your insurance pays for it.” Of course, you do pay for it. And the likelihood that your insurance company will reimburse you for a fraudulently inflated standard service is extremely questionable.
